Cascade Branch Library Refresh Nears Completion
The Cascade Branch of Kent District Library is nearly ready to reopen following a months-long refresh designed to better serve the growing needs of our community.
The public is invited to join Cascade Township, Kent District Library, and project partners for a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting on Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at 5:30 pm. The event will include free Culver’s treats for the first 300 guests, community vendor tables, and guided tours of the newly updated space.
“We’re proud to bring this beautiful, reimagined library space to Cascade,” said Township Supervisor Grace Lesperance. “This project was built around what our community told us they needed most: more flexible gathering spaces, expanded technology, and a welcoming place to learn, create, and connect.”
“The Cascade Library is a dynamic space that serves 200,000 visitors annually,” said Lulu Brown, Regional Manager at Kent District Library. “This is a new chapter that honors the original architecture, adds to Friendship Park, and meets current patron needs.”

Background
Did you know the KDL – Cascade Township Branch and the Township have partnered to provide library and recreational services at the current location for more than 25 years?
Recognizing the need for updates to better serve the community’s evolving needs, a 2018 needs inventory identified several areas for improvement:
- Outdated and inadequate lighting
- Damage to external doors
- Worn carpeting, paint, and wall coverings
- Roof damage
- Outdated furnishings
Additionally, the community shared suggestions through KDL's idea board, which included expanding indoor and outdoor spaces, adding more seating, and maintaining the cozy atmosphere while increasing natural light.
Based on this feedback, Progressive AE developed an initial concept plan that includes:
- Upgrading the lighting system and doors
- Relocating the children’s area to the fish tank side
- Removing walls for more space for activities
- Modifying shelving for better light and access
- Slight expansions to the staff workroom and book sale area
- Upgrading bathrooms for improved accessibility
Funding
This project is funded through an expired millage, with additional operational funds secured through the millage renewal approved in November 2024.
