Approval of September and October, 2005 minutes: Barb motioned for
approval of the September and October, 2005 Library Advisory Board
Minutes. The Board unanimously seconded. All were in favor, none
opposed. Motion carried.
Grand Opening / Ribbon Cutting: The current plan is to have the
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on May 21, 2006. Alternate date would be May
7, 2005. Consideration has to be made on the politicians and speakers
the board would like to invite. Suggestion was made to invite Vern
Ehlers, Debbie Stabenow, Bill Hardiman, Carl Levin and Governor
Jennifer Granholm to speak. It was also mentioned that we should
invite the major donors to speak if they would like to. Lynne
suggested that we have a board on display listing the major donors.
She also suggested having bookmarks made. Mention was made to have a
commemorative program printed up for the ceremony listing speakers and
musicians. It was suggested that we have some music playing inside of
the library during the ceremony and walk-thru.
Ideas for including children in the ceremony included having an
essay writing contest, picture drawing, photography contest, or
anything that is related to expressing what the library means to them.
Prizes will be awarded and can come from area businesses. A committee
should be formed to work on this part of the ceremony and can include
teachers and librarians.
Chuck suggested that we include several children to participate in
the ribbon cutting itself. Possibly supply them with scissors with the
library name on it that the children can keep.
It was discussed that there should be several library staff posted
around the library as tour guides or possibly using teenagers. Also,
it was suggested having a member from the township in the area of the
new addition that will be used by the township for meetings. Butch
Visser may be interested in explaining the mechanics and special
features of the building. The Friends group could be stationed in the
Friends area to show the community what they do for the library.
Time for the ceremony is set for 1:00 p.m. The board will invite
Ron Goodyke to MC the ceremony. We should recognize other dignitaries
and politicians in attendance, that are not speaking. There should be
someone seating guests. Estimated attendance was 400.
Branch Report: Diane reported that she went to the Michigan Library
Association Conference and met Christopher Paul Curtis. He received
the 2005 Author of the Year Award. He is willing to come to the
library for the Grand Opening in 2006. Barbara Rosenblat, a narrator
of books, would love to come back for the Grand Opening. The manager
of Schuler's agreed to come to sell books. The Grand Opening will be a
series of weekends with featured guests.
Diane mentioned that Tammy Schneider had her baby boy on October
28th. They named him Cristian. All are doing well.
Laura attended a marketing workshop in Wyoming. David Genesy,
Director - Redwood City Library in California, was brought in to talk
about how libraries can better market themselves. They received some
very good information on how to make changes in their collecting and
how to arrange things when they open.
Diane was trained last week on the new Events Calendar for the
library. The calendar is through KDL via www.kdl.org. One of the
benefits is that patrons can register themselves for programs, and
staff can print out an attendance sheet . This new software will make
program registration, such as for the Friends Luncheon, much easier.
The company also has software that will make it possible to reserve
rooms via the website.
Materials budget has to be spent by November 15th and other budgets
to be expended by the end of November.
70 people were in attendance at the Early Literacy Program last
Sunday.
Chuck reported that the Friends presented the Cascade Library with
a check for $100,000.00 for the new library addition.
Chuck noted that the township will be paying $20,000.00 from the
general fund for the additional bathroom on the lower level of the
addition. They are working on purchasing a new 150kw generator for the
addition as well, from the same fund.
Tile Sales: There have been approximately 100 tile sales, six of
those being book stacks. There will be another display ad in the
December newsletter with the suggestion to purchase tiles as Christmas
gifts or end of the year tax deduction. The total sales of book tiles
- $8,725.00. The total of all pledges, tile sales, donations, etc. is
$611,048.00.
Friends Report: Barb reported that book sales were meager at the
last sale. 75 boxes were sent to Sand Lake. The Friends would like to
set up a tent area in the library for a children's book sale in
mid-February. Looking for Diane's input on that. The next Friends
meeting will be held in January.
Diane will present the Library Room Use Policy update at the
December meeting.
Next Meeting: The next Cascade Township Library Advisory Board
meeting will be held on December 5, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library's
Program Room.
Meeting adjourned at 8:30.
